Back at Sea

I'm back out on the ocean and happy to be here. I was really beginning to miss it! I left Cabo around 10:00am on Saturday. Things are going really well now. I'm on a nice beam reach and making great speed. I've had good wind all day and I should be able to make up for lost time quickly if it keeps up.

Cabo san Lucas was a lot of fun even though there was a lot of work and everyone was working hard. The people there were all great and I'm looking forward to getting back there in six months. Thanks to Capt Chris, Capt Kevin, and Capt Dave Ive got a good fishing line now and I'm hoping to catch something soon!

Having my AIS working has been great even though its not a vital piece of equipment and I could just use my radar for spotting ships. It does make things quite a bit easier. I spent last night in a pretty heavy shipping area but didn't have a ship come within 3 miles of me all night long.

It's been a lot easier getting settled in this time than it was when I left Marina del Rey. Leaving was a lot easier and after being out one day I'm pretty much all settled in. This whole side track has been a good experience; all the way from dancing around a restaurant with the party host, who happened to be a Mexican guy in a funny suit, to all our new friends, to the hours spent up the mast and in the hold working.

Even though it wasn't intended that way, I'm looking on the past as a sea trial. I found a few problems, and now they're fixed.

This time, I'm ready for the world!

Abby

And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." That was the beginning of everything, and I believe His Spirit is still moving on the face of the waters. This is your beginning. 22. So you are off and running again! Sea trials are over and the starting gun for the main event has fired! Glad you are settling in, feeling positive and "ready for the world". And you are going fishing; good for you. Only takes two to beat Jesse. Can't wait for the video. How many spoons, forks, and pens do you have now out of curiosity?
Remember some of us folks will be thinking about the repairs and replacements at Cabo, so keep us informed, as you have time, to how your multiple systems are operating. Thanks. No sleeping at the nav station now. Start off right with bunk sleeping only. Your brain will adapt and you will sleep better.
Glad you are back in your element; The Sea.

  23. Hi Abby..you are going to win because your boat is way faster. Is that right? Is there a handicap like in other races? Can you make just this one stop and still get the record? All my class is following you and we are so excited! We are also wondering if you steer the boat or is it controlled by a computer? Thanks and have fun!

  29. You GO girl! This time's gonna work after the great shakedown. Even if it bores you, keep checking up on everything no matter how often or trivial. You are as safe (no matter what) as Wild Eyes is healthy!

Nice to hear about your solid beam reach. When I used to sail on SF Bay, I could sail miles and surf too on a good beam reach. Hope you make better than 7 knots and that the weather stays great, as it will when you sail west of the great Hi pressure area off So America.

Always remember Murphy's Law: If it can happen, it will, sooner or later. It's that one isolated time I used to keep in my mind's eye and for sure it happened; the unexpected at least was anticipated and I could react to it fairly easily.

Also Abby, always go with God; He's watching out for you. Much love and Fair Winds John & Louise

  34. Abby,

Great to hear that you’re already back into your routine. Besides taking care of some issues with Wild Eyes, it sounds like Cabo San Lucas was a fun experience. With new friends in Cabo, just imagine the party when you finish your trip there. Good for you for getting some fishing help from some experts. Hope you get a chance to do a little fishing. Keep your eyes open. If you see the water “boiling,” check it out. Could be a school of skipjack or who-knows-what. Well, have fun, Abby. Can’t wait for your next update.

  35. Well all the naysayers were right about Abby North not amounting to much. I was going to follow her voyage when her website came up but my friend in Vancouver said she got a tweet last week about her. Her sponsor from Saudi Arabia or Oman or Ormar(?) took what was left of their boat back to where ever and dropped her. Her dad went back to new york. Not sure what her plans are, but i'd say as big a mess as she's made of this she won't be getting another major sponsor. Plenty of drama with your Abby :) It'll be interesting to see where she is next weekend?!

  36. Hey Abby! Our teacher has a map of the world on the wall for the whole class to keep track of your record. I am dreaming of what it must be like on the ocean with the wind and water sounds and feeling so free. Anyway we have marked off Merina del Rey and Cabo san Lucas so far and everyone from school is checking for updates. My friend's class has been tracking Jessica Watson and she hasn't even stopped so far. But they say you will be the youngest no matter how many places around the world you visit! Maybe she can get a different record I am not sure though. Go Abby!

  42. Hope Abby gets a chance to listen to this very gentle song by harpist and singer Joanna Newsom. It's called "Bridges and Balloons" and is ostensibly about sailing (though is of course really about sailing through life and love).

Heard this for the first time last weekend when down at at the Purple Cow, my favorite dockside coffee shop by the marina in Seattle. Listened to it over the din, then went to the slacker bistro to find out what the heck it was.

    The URL is:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUyeKOGsoZo

Or you can just go to www.youtube.com and type in Joanna Newsom Bridges and Balloons.

Give it a listen. Will be interesting to hear if you agree that this would be a great song for Abby to listen to while broad reaching toward the Equator and beyond.

  46. Have a good trip Abby! For my part, I understand that you want to do this trip non-stop, which is great. But, I would always want to stop at all the exotic ports-of-call along the way. Maybe the next time around you can do it that way. Still, there is something spiritual about the solitude of the ocean... However it ends up, this will be one of the great experiences of your life.

No doubt, you're off to a good start and I hope it will carry on for the rest of your voyage. I'm glad that things worked out well for you, everything happens for a reason. You got a lot of the problems worked out and now you're leaving with a more peaceful mind. It sounds like you had a good sendoff, dancing and just having a good time in general. You'll bring a lot of that laughter with you.

  86. Oh Abby……… How I chuckled at your comment about catching a fish………. Your brother managed to sail around the globe and not catch a fish (or did he catch one???? Can’t remember)… Good luck to you there also! Try to catch one in all 7 oceans babe!

To the anonymous poster yesterday about backup auto-pilots, and even backup windvanes… the answer is YES, have a back up of everything if you can, it’s only a matter of money and storage… For my trip, I had both, so, I had backups of almost everything, but, interestingly, I did need some crazy Lucas Electronics part for Perkins (guuurrrr) engine that chased my from port to port (I had to leave prior to it’s arrival because it was always late… The part was $80, but the re-shipping of it from port to port internationally cost me $500…

The point is, if you afford it, and if you can store it, take it…… But, there will always be something that fails and you don’t have it, so you MUST improvise a solution, the real measurement of your skills…

  107. Wow! So great to see so many folks following Abby! It's also great to see so many familiar names/faces jumped from Zac's ship to hop on Abby's.

daveh - LOL I howled when I read that she wanted to catch a fish. I wish her better luck than Zac had. And, he might have caught one (1)???? I don't think you can count the flying fish....

  111. You have to sing this to "Pants on the ground":
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY8uzqNi4sA
Now don't just read it, you have to sing it.

    Catching that fish
    Catching that fish
Feeling like a fool when you're catching that fish
Hat turned sideways, tongue in the cheek
Feeling so proud as you're yelling out "meat"!

    Gutting that fish
    Gutting that fish
Knowing you're a fool when you're gutting that fish
Hat turned sideways, tongue in the cheek
Feeling like a fool as you're screaming out "eek"!

    Eating that fish
    Eating that fish
You ain't no fool when you're eating that fish
Hat turned sideways, tongue in the cheek
    Good luck my dear Watson
    I'll be hard to beat!

Thanks bro, you've got the best beat and a cool song.

  122. Capn Abby,

Hey, your back on the ocean blue. Way to go. The pics in Cabo looked great! Hey, if you had to go to port, why not a resort spot, eh? With all the upgrade and repairs done, I bet you're feeling more confident about the journey. You got a great team behind you. These lyrics are from Simon and Garfunkel, Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Sail on silver girl, sail on by,
Your time has come to shine,
All your dreams are on their way.
    See how they shine ...

    Godspeed,

    John in Ashland OR

  123. Abby,
On your map, shouldn't day 15 be shown as day #1 since it's your new starting point. You could leave 1 through 11 alone to show it happened, but otherwise, we'll have to subtract to figure out how many days you've been out and how long it takes you to get back to Cabo. Does that make sense?? Nanci

  129. For all's the posts regarding the record
    "Youngest, Solo, Unassisted, Non Stop"

That is the one they are chasing

Jessica needs to complete her trip back in Sydney and she should get the record then if Abby finishes back in Cabo she will take the record.

It is currently held by Jesse Martin

When Laura leaves later this year she will be after
    Youngest, Solo

Hope this clears up the confusion

  142. Hi Abby - I am a long time sailing enthusiast, never owned a boat myself, did a lot of island cruising around Los Angeles on chartered boats(Catalina, Channel Islands). We had great fun. Been sailing since I was little with my mother. I am a big believer in the human spirit, I used to climb mountains and race motorcycles too, have my own kids now and hope they too can follow their dreams. I wish you all the best! Smooth sailing young lady, we're all pulling for ya! Jon

    Hi Abby,
Just curious to see how you’re doing, is the weather getting any better or worse. P/W shows it as reasonably calm and dry, but that’s my interpretation of what they show, I know it’s supposed to be fairly simple, ‘but’…….. maybe someday I’ll figure it out, but you do have your own meteorologist don’t you?
I was glad to see that you felt more relaxed leaving port this time, since you already had a bit of a trial run it would make it easier.
Well Abby, keep up the good work, you’re doing a fine job, I’m proud of you young lady. You’re setting a fine example for people in general, but mostly for your peers with your ‘can do attitude’.

Take good care of yourself and your crew, you do have a little furry crew, don’t you? Why don’t you introduce them??? Curious people would like to know, like me…lol…
    Until the next time……….
May God hold you in the palm of His hand and may the Angels keep your sails full, and I, I will be praying for you.
    Michael (75) from Kingwood, WV

  145. Friday afternoon and it's snowing real good here in Atlanta, but it looks to be much better out where you are: warm and partly sunny with a light breeze from the ENE. I don't know how anyone could drop off to sleep and let the boat sail itself, but I guess after a while with no sleep you get used to the idea. I'm looking forward to watching you progress through your voyage!
