Cabo

February 3, 2010 Cabo san Lucas, Mexico
I'm sitting here in our hotel room with no Internet connection. I've been trying to get a blog up but I can't seem to find anywhere to get online here. I'll probably have to send this from my boat tomorrow.

Everything went really well getting in here at Cabo. I got in Tuesday afternoon in the pouring rain. The past three days I had been living in swimming suits because it was so hot! I was a pretty funny sight coming in bare foot in my foul weather jacket and board shorts! It was good to finally get in here. My dad and the guys that came out from my team came out and met me while I was out a few miles. Everybody here has been so helpful. The guys had planned on coming out in a little panga to meet me but a local boat owner here, Chris, heard that I was headed in and offered to come out in his big power boat with my dad and the team to guide me in. Since then, Chris has offered to do whatever he can to help. Everyone that hears about what has happened and what I'm doing here seems to be so excited and eager to help out.

The work on the boat is going as well as can be expected. We couldn't get a whole lot done on Tuesday because it was getting late and raining pretty hard, but six o'clock this morning we were all hard at work and luckily the weather has been sunny and warm all day!

I met another young sailor today, Emily, and it has been really great hanging out with her a little. So few younger people sail and even less girls do. Its nice to get to know people who are doing similar things and talking to someone who knows what it is like.

The dock master of the marina was very excited to have us here and is letting us stay in an apartment over the office so we can be closer to the marina. Instead of making the two hour row out to the far end of the anchorage Emily is staying with us tonight. There are a ton of good pictures! I've just got to find someplace to send them from. I will send them as soon as I can!

Adios,
Abby

  2. Hey Abby, Apparently I just became your 2,000th follower.
Not nearly as exciting as sailing around the world, but I'll take what I can get. ;)

Just found your blog. I'm thrilled a girl is taking this adventure on! It's inspiring to see someone your age realize the strength we hold when we set our minds to something.
I'm rooting for you. Keep blogging!

  3. Ola Abby,
    Thank you for the update!
Good news again, so! A warm welcome, the team at work, and Emily to chat with... Cabo seems to be the right place for holidays.
We are delighted to learn that you could take some beautiful pics, and we are sure you will post them soon. We are curious, but we can wait!
Enjoy your stay and keep us informed of your second departure!

  4. Hola Abby!

It's good news that you have so many friends taking care of you and your team so you can work on the most important thing: getting Wild Eyes back to her best!

    Keep smiling, take care.

  5. Hola senorita,....Glad you have a friend, that's great. Especially since you're planning such a long voyage alone. Chat up! When do you expect to depart Cabo? Hope your Dad and team can quickly troubleshoot the electrical short in the mast. Remember I'm counting on you to catch more than one tiny tuna, so don't forget to ask the local fishermen how to catch dolphin fish (mahi mahi) when trolling in your boat? They should know as Baja is world famous for off shore fishing. Good luck Abby, stay cheerful and remember more PENS!

  7. Hi Abby, hope to hear that you are off again and underway. Is Zac there with you also? I have to call your father and eventually hope that he can help with my Islander 36. I am also in MDR and we have met. I have been following you everyday and wish often that it was me out there. Just sailed to Catalina and back and saw a few whales and wonder whether you have also had a few encounters on this trip as they are migrating. I will be there to video you returning as I did Zac and wish you the very best. Geoff

Doing some more checking I see Abby has 2 Coursemaster hydraulic autopilots and saw a few videos about how the ram attaches to the tiller. It seems to me moving the rudder would require a lot of power as water is not easily pushed aside. Or is there some type of mechanical leverage (gearing?) built into the tiller/rudder assembly? Anyway my latest question is: on a sunny breezy day, would the alternative energy sources be adequate to fully power the autopilot along with all the other on going electrical needs? If the answer is yes, then the engine only has to start up as the batteries deplete on cloudy, low wind days. Is my thinking on track here?

    Hi Abby,
How are you doing, well I hope. Glad to see that the work is well under way. How far back in the sticks are you, no internet connection, unbelievable, lol… Just kidding, at least you’re under cover for a few days of work.
I was glad to see that they received you with such open arms and that Chris was so helpful. The code of the sailors….yes!!!!!
That was great that you met someone that you could relate to and talked the same language as you, (sailor talk) That was cool that you, and your new friend, Emily, could hang our for a while.
Although I’ve never met you, you sound like a very personable type of an individual who would make friends quite easily. Kudo’s to you, lol…..
Well Abby, it looks like everything is going well for you and I hope it continues that way. I’m just glad for you that everyone is so helpful, and it sounds like their going out of their way to make you as comfortable as possible.
Good luck to you and I hope you’re on your way shortly, after “Wild Eyes” is completely repaired, and willing to run with you. God Bless You.
May God hold you in the palm of His hand and may the Angels keep your sails full, and I, I will be praying for you.

  16. Hi Abby,
    Thanks for the update.
Good to hear things are going well in Cabo.
What, exactly, is being done to your boat?
After you get going again, I would love to see the number of miles you travel each day. Some of us with slow boats get a thrill just hearing about 200 mile days.

I've been following you from Pennsylvania for a little while now. I've spent much of my 25 years on and around sailboats (I'm a fellow girl sailer!), but nothing even close to what you're doing! :-) I love reading your blog, and will continue to check daily. I have a ton of respect for you. I'm glad you're enjoying Cabo...lots of luck getting back on the water ASAP! :-)

Well it is good news for you to make in to port, and that the repairs will be complete soon, So I wound call this the 'shake down cruise'.
So you did not look like you were in good mood in some of those arriving port photos. I will only get harder, and it will be a tough short time in your life. I am glad that you found a female sailing friend, Yes there needs to be more females out sailing, think how you & Jessica Watson can do something to inprove it (may be Emily wound like to sail in her boat along with you, twin solo sailors!! HA HA HA)enjoy the bed for the short time you have it.

    This Moment
In this moment, I am creating the life I choose.
Moments are fleeting. Once passed, they cannot be recaptured. Each moment is a precious gift and holds the promise of a new beginning.

Throughout my day, I allow the presence of God to fill me with an awareness of this now moment. I release my thoughts of yesterday or tomorrow and bask in the wonder of the present moment for the gift that it is. Each moment is a building block upon which my life is created. Every loving thought, every kind word, every prayer, adds to the solid foundation of my life.

Moment by moment, I am creating a full and fulfilling life.

  27. Good Evening Abby,

Glad to hear work on the boat is going well in Cabo. I am sure there is A LOT of interest in you and what Team Abby is doing. It sounds like Chris and Emily have been very supportive.

Another blogger offered this link to a webcam at Cabo and I think I have spotted "Wild Eyes"...

you are on an OUTSIDE DOCK just to the RIGHT of THE MIDDLE of the webcam view...stern to the camera:

    http://www.igy-cabosanlucas.com/marina/webcam/

When you were arriving in heavy rain on Tuesday my friends that I am going to visit north of Puerto Vallarta this Sunday were hit with what they describe as "hurricane force winds" causing a lot of damage...they were not hurt. Apparently that is rare to that area. I am glad you did not have to contend with that too.

All the best Abby....hello to Emily, Laurence and team,

  34. Looking at the pics, have you considered tilting the solar panels toward the south. They seem to be angled away from the sun in the pics. Also, the AIRX wind turbines should be rigged in parrallel to avoid a ground loop. Good luck with the repairs.

  45. Hi Abby,

A great set of photos and conditions around you,all looks good.

It is good to see to code of the sea and those that sail in it, is as alive as it was 40 years ago, where everyone lends a hand regardless. Nice you have a sailor friend in Emily to help you through these days of the electrical refit, even the dock master helping out.

There is a lot of discussion about the authenticity of your solo unassisted trip being legal, seeing that you where given a starting farewell in Marina Del Ray, as is explained to those around here, they don't seem to be able to come to terms with the rules of the circumnavigation that state you must cross the equator twice in your attempt,so as far as your attempt is concerned you have yet to start still being above the equator.

Wonderful to see the hospitality and comaraderie that you are experienceing.

Young people like you, your brother, Jessica,Emily and many others to numerous to name give me great hope for your generation. I just hope that the politicians of today don't go too far in shackeling you with public debt. You all need to be vigilant, study American and world history beginning with George Washington. Keep your eyes and ears open with an open mind and don't be lulled with fancy talk and promises as happened in the last US elections. Nuff said there.

I wish you and your crew the very best of luck and that all repairs and preps will be thoroughly completed soon.

At least with a good shake down cruise behind you, you can stock up and fix it for the long haul.

Please stay safe even when the weather and water are calm.

  52. Buenos dias, Abby,

It’s great to hear that you made it in to Cabo and have the crew working on Wild Eyes. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate to make your stay pleasant. Sounds like you got a really nice reception. If you think that you might do some fishing when you get underway, you might want to pick the brains of some of the fishermen in Cabo. It’s probably way too early for Dorado, but I imagine there would be quite a few Yellowtail this time of year. They would be a lot of fun to catch. That is great that you made a new friend with the same interests as you. I bet she’ll be a faithful follower of yours when you get underway again. Thanks for the great pictures, too. You and Wild Eyes look great. Keep us up to date.

    Hasta luego, Abby.

  54. @Bob from Seattle: I have no idea what the tiller arrangement is on Wild Eyes, hence can't speak to the possibility of a "mechanical advantage".

Asking if the solar panels could power the autopilot by themselves on a sunny day is a bit like asking me if my car could get from San Francisco to Los Angeles on a tank of gas. Kinda depends on what kind of car I drive, its mpg, the condition of the engine and the route I take. A new Prius? - absolutely....my old Saturn wagon?..not a chance!.

I don't think I've ever seen any details posted as to the solar array output and/or what each of her two wind turbines can deliver and I suspect you probably know more about her autopilot power draw than I do.

I'm no expert (by a loooong shot) and not all that experienced in solar/wind to charge battery systems but, since her blog mentioned "adding a few batteries", maybe her panels/turbines do deliver enough power but her storage capacity is short of the mark.

I'm loath to speculate more than that. Her Team must have had confidence in her overall system before she left MDR...could well be just a hitch in the getalong.

Hope they fix it or beef the capacity to handle her problem.

She's gotta be one frustrated young lady.

  68. Abby,
Put word about around the marina stores or the local computer service / sales place and mention to everyone you need internet access close to where you are staying and you might be surprised what comes up. the local computer store would probably loan you a laptop if you offer to put one of his advertising stickers on Wild Eyes somewhere.
Just say it would appear in the background of photos you take while doing your solo voyage. I think he / she would jump at the chance of having their business name on a website the world will see.
You only need to offer them as much as your sponsor will allow and it might be enough to have a laptop by your side while in port.

Failing word of mouth coming up with something, find the local library. In my world travels libraries have been a valuable source for internet access and often in places where there is little technology.

I haven't spoken much about you and your voyage in this post but if we can get internet access for you, we might get more blogs and local area photos. we'd love to see a few shots of that part of the world. if the photo of the rock formation when you were entering the marina area is anything to go by you are probably laid up in a nice location.

Take care, enjoy the stop over while you can and don't forget to try the local popular meals. most locations like that are big on seafood dishes that have been handed down through many generations and they probably have fruits that are new to you.

God speed the repairs so your not delayed in getting around the southern ocean before you get into the colder and bad weather months.

    Let Go, Let God
I release my concerns and accept the good that is unfolding now.
A rabbit might race round and round in a fenced yard, convinced there is no way out. Exhausted, the little creature finally pauses long enough to see the opening in the fence and find his freedom. At times my mind races round and round, too, seeking an answer by examining every detail of the problem. My freedom comes when I lift my thoughts above the situation and surrender to God.
From this spiritual view, I gain a new understanding. I trust Spirit within me and take right action as I am guided. My faith in the constant and infinite supply of God assures me that my good can come to me through any situation. I accept and give thanks for the good that is unfolding now.
I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my supplications.--Psalm 116:1

  74. How long are you planning on being in Cabo? I know you are probably eager to get going soon and that's probably a good thing too... I've been watching the satelite weather maps and it looks like you have clear skies to the south for a little while.

Good luck and I hope that you get all the kinks worked out.

  78. Abby...I'm keeping up to date with your journey with sailing solo..."Like a race horse waiting for the gate to swing open you started out excited about your sailing around the world adventure."

    Do not lose heart...

A set back is simply a setup for your success in accomplishing your dream. Sometimes things happen for a reason...I pray for your safety around you and your sailboat.

"We cannot direct the winds, but we can adjust our sails to them.."

I'm keeping everyone updated on your progress... sailing around the world...

    Remember "Hope-Sails"

    Your new friend Rene'e KAppele

Oh by the way...mahi mahi (dolphin fish) is my fav...I have grum bellies as we speak.

    Bob from Seattle said...
Remember I'm counting on you to catch more than one tiny tuna, so don't forget to ask the local fishermen how to catch dolphin fish (mahi mahi) when trolling in your boat? They should know as Baja is world famous for off shore fishing.
