Waiting for Weather

Well, here we are in Rhode Island again, but this time Wild Eyes is actually mine!

We've been here for the past few days fixing up a few last minute things and waiting for some good wind so we can get out of here and head down to Fort Lauderdale.

It's been a great stay here, other than being absolutely freezing! I am really looking forward to getting going south. Its very nice here, but too cold, and I want to get started on everything! We have met a lot of great people while we have been here which has made it a lot of fun.

We don't know for sure when we'll get out of here, but it will probably be early Sunday as the wind is blowing 30 knots from the south east right at the mouth of the harbor here. A few people have asked where we will be stopping along the way. For now, the trip is planned as a non-stop, but we all know how that can go! I will try to post if we are pulling into port anywhere along the way.

We're all sitting in a warm room at the boat yard eating left over pizza and having a good time, but it will be good to get back and start some real work on the boat, and to be back with all my family and friends.

A nice article by Liz Ellis from Soundings Magazine with a video of Wild Eyes.

  1. Congratulations that the boat is finally yours!

It looks like a boat that is able to take anything up to a full blown hurricane and maybe even that.

Have a good sail down to Ft. Lauderdale. We'll be heading from Lowell, MI (cold) to Bradenton, Fl in a week.

  3. Great birthday present! Congratulations!! I'll be following your adventure just as I did Zach's. Have a good sail down to FL, and if you have to put into port anywhere near by I may just have to hop in the car and head over to meet you, your dad, and your brother Zach.

Should be a good learning experience on the Open 40 going to Ft. Lauderdale.

    Sail fast and sail safe.

  7. Hi! Abby, I am 65yr young Australian, who started sailing VJ's on Sydney harbour Out of the Double Bay Sailing club back in 1958, but unable to now because medical reasons prevent this beautiful natural freedom of you and nature being part of my phisical life.
This does not stop me from still loving the sport.
I am following Jessica Watson on her attempt for the record, and reading up your skills are very similar.
Now you have Wild Eye's it is almost like the hare and the tortoise in boat styles, and when you are on your way is going to make the salt in my blood run again as you both sail around the world.
Regardless who wins the search of your dreams far outway any of the negatives that will be put to you.
You are both IMHO an inpsiration to all generations.
    Safe Passge, will talk later,

  9. Abby,
What a hot rod boat! Watch out for the Outer Banks/Gulf Stream if you decide to go non stop to Fort Lauderdale. Best of luck on your quest!

  10. Hi Abby,
I'm so happy to hear that you found a great boat for your trip!! I had to privilige to meet your Dad down at the dock by Intrepid while in California recently. I was hoping to meet you and Zac at the Westfield Mall opening you were at but something came up so i missed my opportunity to meet 2 of the most inspiring young people I have ever heard of!!
So please know that I will be praying for you (Dad and Zac too as you sail down the East Coast) and continue to keep you in my prayers on your journey. You are an amazing young lady! I'm so happy to see your dream coming true!
Blessings to you and your family

  12. Hi Abby.
Saw a bit of news on Zac page. Sounds like you got good value for your money. 24Knots...Wow. Me and a friend managed 19Kn downhill in a 41' Bavaria, but...we had 55kn wind and 30' waves. I hope you haven't had that much weather.
SY Maryam is still on the hard I'm afraid. We where supposed to start heading South this weekend, now I don't know when we'll be off. I hope soon.
I have been thinking a lot about you, I hope you have had a nice maiden voyage with Wild Eyes, and that you got a few wet action pics with the waterproof camera I gave you. Keep you crew on their toes for as long as possible, You'll soon enough be alone.
Send me an e-mail when you get a chanse, I have more pics than I sent to Matt at Kauffman Sports.
Say hi to Zac and your father. I hope to see you guys around agaim some day.

    Best wishes
    Trond

  13. Hi Abby, Wishing you well in your preparation to sail solo, non-stop and non-assisted around the world. What date will you be leaving? I am also looking at Jesse Watson's blog daily and wish you both all the best with your goals. I know you both want to be the youngest to achieve this goal, but at the the end of the day your safety is the most important thing and enjoying the journey. Will be keeping an eye on your blog Abby.
